Farmer Tracy's Top 3 Tips for Growing Terrific Tomatoes

Here are my top 3 tips for growing terrific tomatoes in the East Mountains (east of Albuquerque, NM):
  1. Plant 'em deep, this encourages *adventitious rooting* along the stem. The more developed the root system, the healthier the plant and more productive it is likely to be.
  2. Shade cloth and wind protection. The sun and wind are brutal in the EM. Shade cloth and wind breaks are game changers.
  3. Consistent watering and mulch. We use drip tape but if you water by hand, make it consistent (and make sure you are not over watering) to help prevent cracking and blossom end rot. Mulching helps keep soil surface temperatures cooler and reduces soil surface moisture evaporation.

Hi. My two heirloom tomato plants from you are recovering nicely from the hail some weeks ago. The nasturtium seeds I planted were doing great and are now coming back from being turned to mush and being covered in tiny beetles. The Lion’s Tail is getting ready to bloom and the cinnamon basil is the queen of it all. Many thanks!

Hi Christina! I'm so glad you are happy. Yes, I find nasturtiums to be rather resilient as long as they have a bit of shade from the intense sun. They do seem to work as a trap crop for flea beetle for me, as well. Hope you have a fantastic week.
