Farmer Tracy's Top 3 Tips for Growing Terrific Tomatoes

6/29/2025

Here are my top 3 tips for growing terrific tomatoes in the East Mountains (east of Albuquerque, NM):
  1. Plant 'em deep, this encourages *adventitious rooting* along the stem. The more developed the root system, the healthier the plant and more productive it is likely to be.
  2. Shade cloth and wind protection. The sun and wind are brutal in the EM. Shade cloth and wind breaks are game changers.
  3. Consistent watering and mulch. We use drip tape but if you water by hand, make it consistent (and make sure you are not over watering) to help prevent cracking and blossom end rot. Mulching helps keep soil surface temperatures cooler and reduces soil surface moisture evaporation.

6/28/2025 -- LAST DAY Plants at Polks

6/28/2025

Dropped off this morning -- Saturday, 6-28-25 -- at Polk's Folly Farm market in Cedar Crest.
Quantities are limited and people were already buying before I left.
TODAY IS OUR FINAL DAY to offer summer season plants.
  • If you are looking for a great container tomato, I recommend the Manitoba (pictured below). It is a determinate variety that does great in containers and in the ground. While it may slow a bit during the hottest stretch of summer, it just keeps going and going and going so do NOT pull it out. Ours bounce back just as soon as temps even out and keep producing until the first freeze. Another great container variety is Wild Fred Dwarf (also pictured below--last picture).
  • Whatever is not sold will be picked up at 3pm today.
  • We will plant anything that remains unsold for the season.
  • Thank you for supporting East Mountains LOCAL FARMERS.
